- Welcome back to my blog! This week I have decided to take you on a tour of a website that I touched on briefly last week called Pets in the Classroom. I found there are not only the grants available but also some great teaching resources about having pets in a classroom!
Please listen into my screencast video for some great resources and testimonials that reconfirm the positive impacts animals have on well-being!
I apologize, the last few seconds were somehow cut off my video after uploading it to Youtube to download it but I just wanted to say thank you for following along with me today to learn more about the positive impact of animals on well-being! I hope you find the resources helpful!

This was such a great post! You’ve officially got “my wheels turning.” I immediately gravitated to the idea that pets can help students manage emotions. Then, I started thinking about how calming fish aquariums are and how beautiful they can be with the lights shining through the water, which lead me to Pinterest. It turns out, taking care of an aquarium is a big commitment, especially during the summer, which lead me back to your “Pets in the Classroom” website. After reading some of the resources there, I think a gerbil or hamster would be a lot of fun, which lead me to the Cranbrook pet store. It turns out, hamsters and gerbils only cost $24.99! And I’m certain, someone would donate a cage. That is so reasonable! (And if you’re interested, hedge hogs are WAY more money. Haha…. They’re about $299. I may have wanted one of those for my class pet before gravitating to the hampster.)
Anyways, great post Chels! You totally sold me on this website and this idea. I’m going to make this a reality one day!

Hi Kim!
I am so glad you found the Pets in the Classroom website helpful! I definitely want to make this a reality one day as well. I love the hampster idea! I had two growing up and I absolutely loved them. I cannot believe they are only 24.99 her in Cranbrook! Thanks for looking into that. That is very reasonable. Maybe one day when we are both teaching we can both get hamsters as classroom pets at the same time so that we can go through the process together!
Thanks for your comment Kim 🙂
